More than £30,000 raised to bring home body of Peterlee man

More than £30,000 has been raised to bring home the body of a County Durham man who died overseas.

Dan Sirrell, 21, was talented young footballer from Peterlee. He died while on holiday in Amsterdam after falling into a river on Sunday morning.

His friends set up a JustGiving page to help raise funds for his family, immediately after the announcement of his death, which was made via his football club's website.

The original target of £7,500 was met within a day.

In a tribute, his family described Dan as "a bright star, who was beautiful inside and out".
