Northumbria Police say they have received a good response from the public following last night's Crimewatch Whitley Bay rape appeal.

The rape took place at 3.45am on Sunday, October 16, in the rear lane of Esplanade Place, behind Zync Bar and a reconstruction was shown on Crimewatch last night.

We have had a good response so far to the Crimewatch appeal. We have received more than 40 calls which we are being followed up by detectives working on the investigation. We're continuing to appeal for anyone with information about the attack to contact the force's Rape Investigation Team on the 101-non emergency number or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Police renew rape appeal

Police are renewing their appeal for information about a rape in Whitley Bay.

A 29-year old woman was assaulted in the rear lane of Esplanade Place near Zync Bar at around 3.45am on Sunday 16 October.

The victim was with a male friend when the attack happened. He was punched and she was raped.

A reconstruction of the incident and interviews will be shown on BBC's Crimewatch tonight to appeal for more information.
