O'Neill praises rival efforts

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill has praised the achievements of local rivals Newcastle United this season.

The Magpies are currently fourth in the Premier League table, and could qualify for the Champions League.

Speaking before his side's clash with Bolton tomorrow, O'Neill said it's something the Black Cats will try to aspire to next season.

Newcastle United Boss Pardew accepts rules are rules

Newcastle United Manager Alan Pardew is refusing to get worked up over the possibility of his side missing out on a lucrative Champions League place through no fault of their own.

The Magpies are currently 4th in the Premier League, a position that would normally guarantee them a place in the qualifying rounds of next seasons Champions league.

But after Chelsea's remarkable efforts in Barcelona, there's now a chance 4th place won't be good enough.

If the Blues win the final in Munich next month they're guaranteed a place in next season's Champions League as holders of the competition.

But only four teams from any nation can qualify, so if Chelsea lift the trophy on May the 19th and finish OUTSIDE the top four in the premier league, something has to give.

That scenario would lead to the team finishing fourth being bumped down to the Europa League and potentially losing out on millions of pounds in revenue.

But Pardew says his in-form side aren't worried about the situation, because they can't do anything about it. Newcastle United have won six premier league games in a row and tomorrow they're away to Wigan Athletic.
