A woman from Rowland's Gill, whose fight with thyroid cancer inspired her to set up a charity to help others, has won a national award. Kate Farnell was named Most Aspirational in the Inspirational Women of the Year awards.
She set up the Newcastle-based Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust and held the country's first awareness campaign where a thousand people had checks and two lives were saved. Kate says she was shocked to win the award.
