Man remains in critical condition after Gosforth accident

A 19-year-old man is critically ill in hospital after being hit by a car in Newcastle.

The accident happened on the Great North Road near Jesmond when he was hit while returning from a night out.

Police say that the car involved was travelling north and did not stop.

A 20-year-old man has been bailed as investigations continue.

Two men and two women have been released with no further action.

A male pedestrian was hit by a car on the B1318 Great North Road, near Jesmond at some time before 2:27am. The 19-year-old is in a critical condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Police have arrested five people in connection with the incident.

Five people have been arrested after a man was hit by a car in Newcastle in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police were called to the incident on the B1318 Great North Road, near Jesmond at 2:27am. The 19-year-old pedestrian sustained potentially life-threatening injuries, and remains in a critical condition at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Three men, aged 28, 20 and 19, and two women, both 20, have all been arrested in connection with the crash.

Any witnesses are being asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101.

The Great North Road in Newcastle is closed following an incident involving a pedestrian and a vehicle. The accident happened just after 2am this morning between the junction at Forsyth Road and the city centre. The road is expected to remain closed for some hours.
