Press reports claim Bishop of Durham named as new Archbishop

The Bishop of Durham is due to be named as the new Archbishop of Canterbury, according to reports made in the national press.

It follows growing speculation that the Rt Rev Justin Welby could be Rowan Williams' successor, fuelled by the suspension of bets by bookmakers Ladbrokes on Tuesday.

The 56-year-old became Bishop of Durham in November 2011, taking up the fourth most senior position in the Church of England.

Sources have confirmed that the Rt Rev Justin Welby will be announced as the successor to Dr Rowan Williams as early as Friday, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Both a spokesman from Lambeth Palace and Downing Street declined to comment and refused to confirm or deny the appointment.

Further speculation over new Archbishop appointment

There has been further speculation that the Bishop of Durham may be in line to become the next Archbishop of Canterbury after he cancelled an appearance on a radio show.

A spokesman from the Rt Rev Welby's office confirmed that the bishop will not appearance on Friday's recording of BBC Radio 4's Any Questions at the National Railway Museum at Shildon in County Durham.

The bookmakers Ladbrokes and William Hill have stopped taking bets on the Bishop of Durham becoming the next Archbishop of Canterbury.

Justin Welby, who previously worked as an executive in the oil industry, became Bishop of Durham just a year ago.

In the last 24 hours the odds on his being announced as the new Archbishop shortened dramatically - making him the clear favourite.

A panel has been considering the appointment and a decision is expected soon.
