'The Tube' celebrates 30th anniversary

It is thirty years to date since the first episode of The Tube - the flagship music show produced by Tyne Tees Television - was broadcast.

Today marks thirty years since the iconic music show The Tube began.

The show, fronted by Paula Yates and Jools Holland brought the biggest acts of the eighties to the iconic studio 5 in Newcastle.

Often funny and irreverent, the programme was launched in November 1982 from Tyne Tees TV's Studio 5.

The Tube changed pop television forever and made Newcastle the capital of cool during the eighties.

A special evening looking back at the programme will take place at The Sage in Gateshead tonight, hosted by pop historian Chris Phipps.
