Children in Darlington have been packing shoeboxes to send to soldiers serving out in Afghanistan to help them celebrate Christmas.

St John's Church of England Academy has been putting together boxes for the soldiers since 2008, when one of the parents at the school came up with the idea to send the parcels to soldiers serving in the 5th Regiment Royal Artillery.

The 5th Regiment Royal Artillery are a local unit based at Catterick Garrison.

The unit have since struck up a close relationship with the school, coming to deliver fun PE lessons and joining the children for special assemblies.

The School Bear, Alfie, has even travelling with the soldiers when they have been on active duty.
