Durham Cathedral played host to a musical extravaganza as hundreds of the region's children showcased their musical talent.

More than 250 children from Sunderland took part in a concert as part of the Cathedral's Music Outreach programme.

Among the performances was the famous story of the Lambton Worm - complete with 50 feet long worm designed by the children.

The concerts are designed to give the children the chance to learn musical skills, as well as to perform in such a historic setting.

"Wisht lads and lasses" perform at Durham Cathedral

Schoolchildren from around the region joined choristers from Durham Cathedral today as part of the Cathedral's Music Outreach Programme.

The programme brings children from eight schools around the region to work with the choristers every term, culminating in three large concerts for friends, families and the local community.

"We hope the children and their families all enjoy this wonderful occasion, which they have all worked so hard with their schools to prepare for.

We really value the long standing partnership we have with Durham Cathedral through this Music Outreach Programme. It not only provides our schools with the opportunity to learn musical skills and develop musical talent alongside the choristers, but also to perform in front of friends and family in historic and hallowed surroundings."

– Councillor Pat Smith, Portfolio Holder for Children's Services

The schools taking part in today's concert were:

  • Barnwell Primary
  • Dubmire Primary
  • Easington Lane Primary
  • Redby Primary
  • St Cuthbert's RC Primary
  • Usworth Colliery Primary

50 feet worm to sing "Wisht lads and lasses"

Children from primary schools around Sunderland are taking part in an outreach concert in Durham Cathedral where they will be singing the legendary Wearside song the Lambton Worm.

The children have not only learnt the words of the song, but also designed and made a worm costume that is up to fifty feet long.

The concert is one of three large school music outreach concerts a year performed at the Cathedral.
