Region encouraged to support local businesses

With just days to go until Christmas, the region's shoppers are being encouraged to support our local businesses and producers so they are not squeezed out of the market by the bigger stores.

The Country Land and Business Association is running a 'Think local, shop local this Christmas' campaign to highlight the role independent shops play in the rural economy.

A couple from North Yorkshire, Andrew and Maria Henshaw, say the money people spend now is crucial and can set them up for the New Year.

"It is very important because it does carry us through January and February time, when it is very quiet.

"It is not just ourselves. It is local suppliers, producers which put their products in at Mainsgill. It gives them a boost as well for the lean times."

– Andrew Henshaw, Shop owner

"It keeps young people that get jobs in the area, the school thrives through that as well and they are able to stay in the countryside.

"That is what the countryside needs. It needs the youth to stay in the area as well as old generations."

– Maria Henshaw, shop owner
