Police are appealing for witnesses to a crash in South Shield that left a female pedestrian critically injured in hospital.
Sergeant Steve Templeman, from the Northumbria Police Road Safety Unit, said:
“We’re particularly keen to speak to a cyclist who was passing who came to the immediate aid of the woman at the scene.
“It’s possible this person has important information about the incident and we’re keen to speak to them. They or any other witnesses should contact police as soon as possible.”

A 79-year-old woman is critically injured in hospital after being hit by a car on the A194 Western Approach at South Shields. It happened close to the junction with Dean Road on Friday at around 4:25pm.

A woman remains critically ill in hospital after being stuck by a car on South Tyneside.
The 79-year-old was hit by a Vauxhall Corsa on the A194 Western Approach at South Shields, close to the junction with Dean Road on Friday at around 4:25pm. She was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment.
Any witnesses are being asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101.
