A pensioner has been left seriously injured after being assaulted at a house in York on Friday night.

Police comment on York assault

Detective Superintendent Heather Pearson, of North Yorkshire Police said:

As a result of the incident a criminal investigation is underway. Officers are deployed to support the 83-year-old woman who is being cared for by family members.

"A number of enquiries are ongoing including tracing people who can assist.

"Detectives would like to speak to anyone who can assist in establishing a picture of the events leading up to the assault and ask that they contact York CID as soon as possible."

Man arrested after York assault

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a pensioner was assaulted in York.

The 81-year-old suffered serious head and chest injuries after being attacked at a house in the Upper Poppleton area shortly before 9pm on Friday night. He was taken to York District Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

An 83-year-old woman, who was also in the property at the time of the incident, was uninjured although left very shaken.

Police have arrested a 56-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder.
