Police are continuing to appeal for information into the cause of a crash on the A1 in Gateshead in which two people died.

The collision happened on the southbound carriageway near Swalwell at around 8:40pm on Friday night. A woman and a 21-year-old man both died as a result of the collision.

A 31-year-old was arrested in connection with the incident and has been released on bail.

Any witnesses are being asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101.

Two people have died after a crash involving a motorcycle on the A1 (Western Bypass) in Gateshead last night.

The collision happened on the southbound carriageway near Swalwell at around 8:40pm. A woman died at the scene, while a 21-year-old man was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary but later pronounced dead.

A 31-year-old has been arrested in connection with the incident and released on bail.

Any witnesses are being asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101.

Police appeal after serious collision on the A1

A motorbike has been involved in a serious collision on the A1 (Western Bypass) near Swalwell in Gateshead this evening, May 17.

The collision happened about 8:40pm. Police say the road is currently closed in both directions and will remain closed for some time.
