Stalemate over repairs to ancient walls

Calls to repair the ancient walls of Barnard Castle in County Durham have been met with indecision from three different parties. Local resident Gary Marshal launched an appeal to save the building from crumbling away. Part of it collapsed four years ago.

But an argument is rumbling on between Raby Estates, English Heritage and Durham County Council over who is responsible. Gary Marshall warned:

"The walls are in a state of disrepair and there is going to be an accident where people could get seriously hurt. With the next decent rainfall, there is going to be a slip and it will take a couple of trees with it.”

English Heritage maintains other parts of the castle site, but not the Bridgegate side.

Demands are being made to carry out urgent repairs to the walls of Barnard Castle in County Durham.

The side of the ancient walls facing Bridgegate in the town collapsed four years ago.

They have yet to be repaired following a row between Raby Estates, English Heritage and Durham County Council over who is responsible.

Barnard Town Council say they will back a petition raised by concerned local resident Gary Marshall who says the walls are in a dangerous state of disrepair.
