There has been huge disappointment, after hopes were dashed that the A1 in Northumberland would finally be upgraded.

The Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, announced details of road and rail improvements but there was no mention of dualling the A1 between Morpeth and Berwick.

The Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith has given a cautious welcome to the statement by Danny Alexander, despite the bitter disappointment for campaigners who had hoped for the dualling of the A1 in Northumberland.

The Chief Secretary to the Treasury gave details of government spending on road and rail projects, but has ordered only a feasibility study for the A1 north of Newcastle.

The Government's failure to commit to dualling the A1 between Morpeth and Berwick has been greeted with disappointment by motorists and businesses in the region.

Speaking in the Commons today, June 27, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, announced details of road and rail improvements totalling £28 million.

Campaigners had hoped for an upgrade to the A1 in Northumberland, but it remains under review.

No commitment to dual A1 in Northumberland

There has been disappointment in the region after a proposal to dual the A1 was not included in investment plans.

It was hoped that long-delayed plans to dual the A1 road through Northumberland would finally be given the green light. It follows decades of campaigning for full dualling of the route between Newcastle and the Scottish Border.

There are plans to improve the A19 between Newcastle and South Shields.
