The actor Ricky Tomlinson told ITV News Tyne Tees reporter Frances Read why he supported this weekend's Durham Miners' Gala.
Speeches from key union figures are beginning at Durham Miners' Gala. Bob Crow, the General Secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union, Len McCluskey, the leader of Unite, and Kevin Maguire of the Daily Mirror will be among those addressing crowds.
The General Secretary of the RMT Union is expected to call for the creation of a "new party of labour" at today's Durham Miners' Gala.
Speaking in advance of the Gala, RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said: "There is a whole world of opportunity outside the constraints of the Labour Party and RMT would urge them to embrace it and join us in this new political project."
Thousands of people are expected in the centre of Durham tomorrow for the 129th Miners Gala.
Banners will be paraded through the city, with people lining the streets to cheer them on.
