Union leader to call for "new party of labour"

The General Secretary of the RMT Union is expected to call for the creation of a "new party of labour" at today's Durham Miners' Gala.

Speaking in advance of the Gala, RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said: "There is a whole world of opportunity outside the constraints of the Labour Party and RMT would urge them to embrace it and join us in this new political project."

Preparations underway for 'The Big Meeting'

Thousands of people are expected to flood the centre of Durham tomorrow for the 129th Miners Gala.

The event is known as 'The Big Meeting' and draws people from across the region.

Banners will be paraded through mining villages towards the city centre.

Ed Miliband was the first Labour leader to attend last year since Neil Kinnock in 1989.
