Newcastle's annual Mela is taking place over the Bank Holiday weekend. Thirty thousand people are expected to attend the celebration of South Asian culture.

Thousands expected at Newcastle Mela

Thousands of revellers are expected to attend the 20th annual Newcastle Mela today.

The free event, which is organised by Newcastle Asian Arts and Music (NAAM), is a multicultural celebration of the city's diversity including Punjabi, Pakistani, Bengali and Hindu cultures.

Organisers say this year's event will see dancers and musicans of international fame perform on the main stage at Exhibition Park.

Newcastle Mela "brings together" communities

Councillor Hazel Stephenson, Cabinet Member for Communities at Newcastle City Council, said:

"Newcastle has a long and proud association with the Newcastle Mela. It is a great event which brings together our diverse communities in a weekend of cultural celebration.

"This year there is a great line up of acts and performers and I'm sure that anyone who attends will have a great time."
