A Sunderland star has been charged with drink driving after he was arrested while team mates played in a cup game on Tuesday night.

Striker Stephane Sessegnon was stopped by police on Westgate Road, Newcastle, just before 8pm on Tuesday.

It was around the time the Black Cats went 1-0 down to MK Dons in the Capital One Cup clash at the Stadium of Light.

A police spokesman said Sessegnon, who plays for the Benin national side, will appear before Newcastle Magistrates' Court on October 4.

He said: "At 7.51pm on Tuesday August 27 a 29-year-old man was arrested on Westgate Road, Newcastle, on suspicion of drink driving.

"Stephane Sessegnon, of Runnymede Road, Ponteland, has been charged with drink driving and is due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates on October 4."

Sunderland went on to win the cup tie 4-2.
