Protests in South Shields

A march led by the English Defence League (EDL) and a counter-protest by groups including South Tyneside Unites Against Fascism, both passed off peacefully. Police made seven arrests.

South Shields EDL demo appears to pass peacefully

A demonstration by members of the English Defence League and a group calling themselves the North East Infidels appears to have passed off peacefully in South Shields, according to ITV News Tyne Tees journalists at the rally.

The protesters marched along an agreed route, escorted by police, from Mile End Road to Pier Parade and back.

Another group staged a counter-protest, including members of a newly-formed group called South Tyneside Unites Against Fascism and others from further afield.
