Sunderland head coach Paolo Di Canio walked across to speak to fans at the away end of the Hawthorns, at the end of a dismal 3-0 defeat by West Brom.

He applauded and gestured for them to keep their chins up despite a disheartening performance by his team.

The poor performance was compounded by the fact that the first goal came from an ex-Black Cats player, who Di Canio let go on transfer deadline day.

Further goals came from Ridgewell (76") and Amalfitano (90).

Sunderland had played the final ten minutes with only ten men after Steven Fletcher went off injured, because the maximum three substitutions had already been made.
