Wear-Tyne derby: Police praise football fans

Northumbria Police has praised the majority of football fans after Sunday's Wear-Tyne derby.

In total 20 people were arrested, seven of those during an operation carried out before the match. Almost 50,000 supporters attended the game at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland.

"Twenty arrests out of crowd of that size is very low. I'm pleased that the vast majority of fans who attended today were clearly there to enjoy the football and were not interested in causing trouble."

– Chief Supt Steve Neill

In Sunderland, the police were out early, visiting bars and pubs and speaking to fans. In Newcastle, officers, working with British Transport Police, helped to get more than 1,500 people onto special Metro and Rail services at Central Station in Newcastle.

"Public safety is always our number one priority during any football match and the few people who chose to pose a threat to public safety were dealt with swiftly by police."

– Chief Supt Steve Neill
