An inquest has been opened into the death of a Durham University student, whose body was found more than five weeks after he went missing.

An inquest has been opened into the death of a 20-year-old Durham University student.

Sope Peters was last seen alive outside the Klute nightclub near Elvet Bridge in the city centre during an evening out with friends.

An extensive search was launched and his family travelled from America in an attempt to find him. However, his body was later recovered from the River Wear more than five weeks after he went missing. The inquest was adjourned this afternoon.

Student death inquest to open

The inquest into the death of Durham University student Sope Peters is expected to open today.

The body of the 20-year-old was found in the River Wear earlier this month.

Sope, who was in his second year of an economics degree at Durham University, was last seen in Klute bar on 29th October.His body was discovered in the river between Prebends Bridge and Framwellgate Bridge almost six weeks after his disappearance.

Police: We have had 'tremendous support'

Police have thanked emergency services who helped recover a body discovered in the River Wear. Officers were called to the area between Prebends Bridge and Framwellgate Bridge in Durham City.

No formal identification has taken place, however the family of missing Durham University student Sope Peters were informed of the development. There are no suspicious circumstances.

"Throughout the time Sope has been missing, we have also had tremendous support from other agencies in the searches carried out both in the water and along the riverbank, and his fellow students covered the city with posters appealing for information.”

Body recovered from River Wear

Police searching for a missing Durham University student have recovered a body from the River Wear in Durham city centre.

Officers said the body was found this afternoon between Prebends Bridge and Framwellgate Bridge. A formal identification is yet to take place but the family of missing student Sope Peters have been informed.

Sope, 20, went was last seen leaving his flat in Highgate at around 11:30pm on October 29.
