First stop on their tour of Lapland and the plane of children from our region visited the enchanted forest to enjoy a huge range of wintry activities. There was sledging, husky rides, snowmobiles among other things:
A plane full of children who have all had serious medical problems to deal with were greeted in Lapland by specially dressed Santa's little helpers. Morgane Corneloup was glad of her squirrel outfit in the -10C temperatures, though she explained that the temperature was relatively mild:
For some of the children who took part in the trip it was their first time on a plane. 'Loopy Louise', herself a Monarch crew member, worked as a jester during the journey to keep passengers entertained, even disappearing into the cockpit to help land the plane!
It is surely every child's dream to fly off to Lapland to meet Father Christmas at this time of year and for one very special plane full of youngsters that is exactly what's happened.
Dozens of families from our region whose children have had to cope with difficult medical conditions have flown out there and our reporter James Webster was with them as they went 'Searching For Santa'. This is part one of his special report:
Former footballer Chris Kamara was one of the celebrities who joined the 80 or so families on board the flight. He was a guest on the trip last year as well and says it is one of the most humbling experiences it is possible to have:
Some of the children on board the dream trip to Lapland only found out they were going on the morning of the flight. During the three-hour journey they wrote their letters to Father Christmas and spoke to us about what they hoped to do when they landed.
The plane to Lapland was piloted by Captain Paul Habibi. It was his first time on the trip. He took some time out to talk us through the route and explain how privileged he and the crew feel about being involved.
Joining families on board the trip to Lapland were several celebrities. Among them was actress Denise Welch who has been on the trip several times before over the last ten years. She says it is something she looks forward to:
As children arrived at the airport they were greeted by a collection of cartoon characters who followed the families through the terminal building. Many of the children hadn't flown before.
The crew on the Monarch flight had all volunteered to go on the trip, dressing in festive outfits for the occasion. Also on board were celebrities including Emmerdale cast members John Middleton, Nick Miles and Bhaskar Patel, actresses Denise Welch and Lauren Drummond, and sportsman Chris Kamara.
Parents and their children gathered at Humberside Airport for the trip-of-a-lifetime to Lapland. There was huge excitement as they waited to board the plane. Each of the youngsters was looking forward to meeting Father Christmas. For some it was their first time flying.
