Lifeboats old and new come together

The world's second oldest lifeboat has come stern to stern with her modern day counterpart after undergoing a five month refurbishment.

The Spirit of the Tyne was one of the original lifeboats built in South Shields 180 years ago. Across six decades she rescued more than a thousand people from the seas.

Now 30 volunteers have spent five months stripping the old paint, repairing the wood and restoring her to her original colour. After the renovation she will now be put back on display in the town but whilst she was by the river the Tyne's current lifeboat came to visit her.
