A man who killed his wife after discovering she was having an affair has been jailed for life.

Heather Arthur was found dead in the couple's home in Gosforth in April last year.

Mark Arthur was sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court this morning.

The 50-year-old will serve a minimum of 18 years.

Police respond to guilty verdict

The detective who led the investigation into Heather Arthur's murder has released the following statement:

"Heather Arthur was killed by her husband in a violent attack at the family home. Mark Arthur initially told police it had been a tragic accident, however, in court he admitted unlawfully killing his wife by stabbing her, saying he had lost control.

It's impossible to put into words how tragic this has been for Heather, her family and her friends and it has been made all the more traumatic by having to endure a full trial at court.

... I welcome the verdict reached by the jury that he was guilty of murder and as a result he will spend a number of years in prison."

– Det Ch Insp Ged Noble, Northumbria Police
