It's emerged that a Newcastle GP who was contracted to carry out pre-employment medicals on job-seekers would have faced criminal charges for sexual assault if he was still alive today.

The organisation says victims often keep what's happened bottled inside for decades and are frightened to tell their families.

But by contacting support groups may are able to get their lives back on track.

Barclays says it's working closely with police on GP allegations

Barclays Bank was just one of the companies who contracted Dr Gordon Bates to conduct pre-employment medicals on prospective staff. Since the allegations came to light it has worked closely with Northumbria Police to help the investigation and support those affected.

A Barclays' spokesman said "Last year Barclays became aware of an allegation about a GP who conducted pre-employment medicals in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The information was immediately shared with the Northumbria Police, who have investigated the allegations.

“Barclays has done all it can to help the police enquiry and to support employees involved in this sensitive investigation.”

Police investigating GP say 48 criminal acts have been recorded

Police investigating alleged sexual assaults involving a North East GP who carried out pre-employment checks on job-seekers say 48 allegations have been recorded as criminal acts.

We can confirm that Northumbria Police received a number of allegations of sexual assault dating back to the 1970s and 1980s, made against a man who is now deceased. The allegations related to pre-employment medical examinations carried out on behalf of Barclays Bank.

All of the allegations have been thoroughly investigated by specialist officers. 48 of the allegations have been recorded as criminal acts. All of the complainants have been informed of the outcome of the investigation. Police have confirmed a North East GP who was contracted to carry out pre-employment medicals on job seekers would have faced sex assault charges if he had still been alive.

Dr Gordon Bates, who died in 2009, carried out examinations on hundreds of people from his Newcastle home in the 1970s and 80s

He was carrying out assessments for a number of public and private sector companies, including Barclays Bank. He was not a direct employee of any of the companies he worked for.

The allegations came to light after an alleged victim reported what had happened to her after reading about Jimmy Savile.

Police have confirmed they have investigated a number of complaints of which 48 have been recorded as criminal acts.

Barclays stressed that Dr Bates was not their employee and they were one of a number of companies he was contracted to. They have been working closely with the police throughout.
