The A1(M) northbound between junction 48 at Boroughbridge and junction 49 at Dishforth has now reopened, following a serious collision.
The crash, involving two HGVs, happened around 5am this morning. Emergency services have been working at the scene, forcing them to close the road throughout the morning.
There is still around 5 to 6 miles of stationary traffic northbound towards J48, which may take some time to disperse.
The A1(M) northbound between junction 48 at Boroughbridge and junction 49 at Dishforth will remain closed until further notice.
Police are expecting to open lane 3 of the carriageway before midday, to allow trapped traffic to disperse. However, motorists are still advised to avoid the area.
Emergency services are working at the scene.
Those currently travelling northbound are advised to leave at junction 46 and use the diversion on to the A168, to rejoin the A1(M) at junction 49.
Motorists caught in traffic are urged to remain in their vehicles and stay clear of the hard shoulder at all times.
This is for their own safety, and that of the emergency services.
