Police are appealing for witnesses to an armed robbery at 6.30am this morning (February 7) in Sainsbury’s supermarket on Crescent Road in Middlesbrough.
Two security guards were filling up the store's cash machine when one was confronted by two men wearing balaclavas.
They were brandishing a large machete- type weapon and a scuffle ensued.
The pair frog-marched the guard over to his colleague inside the store and threatened them into handing over a substantial amount of cash.
The driver of a dark car was waiting for the robbers outside the shop and they drove off down Crescent Road towards Union Street.
Police have subsequently recovered a grey Vauxhall Astra in Meath Street in Middlesbrough a short distance away from the scene.

It happened at Chisholm Bookmakers in Briardale Road at 8.55 pm on Thursday, January 23.
A man entered the premises and threatened a member of staff with a knife.
He stole a quantity of cash before leaving.
No-one was injured during the incident but the staff member was left shaken.
The offender is described as in his mid 20s, 5 feet 10 inches tall, of skinny to medium build, with a freckled complexion, ginger eyebrows and a local accent.
He was wearing a grey coat with a hood, gloves and dark tracksuit bottoms.
Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted armed robbery at an off-licence in Newcastle. It happened at the Nunsmoor Off-licence on Nunsmoor Road at 9pm on Friday. Two men entered the shop armed with a knife and a stick, and demanded cash. They left the shop empty handed.
