A canoeist has been declared dead after being rescued from the Arkle Beck at Reeth, near Leyburn. North Yorkshire Police say they were called shortly after 1pm following reports that the man, who was canoeing with friends, had got into difficulties on the Beck.
A search was conducted by police, members of the Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and an RAF air support unit. The man was found in the Beck and taken by air ambulance to James Cook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police say there appear to be no suspicious circumstances and are treating the death as an accident. They have not released details of the man's identity yet.
