Five injured in Washington crash

Five people have been taken to hospital after a serious crash in Washington.

The incident happened on the A1231 eastbound just before the Barmston turnoff at around 7:27am on Sunday. A car hit a lampost, and shortly afterwards a second car crashed into an ambulance which had stopped at the scene.

Four people have been taken to the Sunderland Royal infirmary, and one person has been admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

The road has been closed between the A182 and the A195, and is expected to remain shut for several hours.

Any witnesses to the crash are being asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101.

The family of a woman who was killed in a three-vehicle crash in County Durham have revealed she was pregnant.

Alison Raey, 39, from Stanley was a passenger on a motorcycle that collided with a milk tanker and a van on the A688 near Bowburn on Thursday evening. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her family have confirmed she was expecting their fourth child at the time of the incident, and say the couple had already decided to name their unborn baby 'Thomas'.

Mrs Raey's 51-year-old husband, David, and the tanker driver, were both arrested on suspicion of death by careless driving and released on bail.


Stockton man killed in motorcycle crash

A motorcyclist from Teesside has died after being involved in a collision in North Yorkshire.

The 64-year-old, from Ingleby Barwick in Stockton-on-Tees, suffered serious head injuries when his motorcycle collided with a car on the B6479 at Stainforth, on August 11. He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary, and died on August 30.

The man was part of a group of ten bikers who were travelling north from Settle towards Ribblehead when the incident occurred.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is being asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101.

Two people die after car crash

Two people died when a hatchback car came off a road in County Durham and hit a tree.

A 20-year-old driving a silver Citroen Saxo and his 17-year-old passenger died at the scene of the crash on the B6279 near Staindrop at around 3pm on Sunday.

Police said it was unclear whether the poor weather in parts of the North East on Sunday afternoon played a part in the crash.

A spokesman for the police said the driver, from Darlington, appeared to lose control of his car near a junction with Kiln Lane, just outside Ingleton.


Woman hit by bus in Newcastle

A woman has been taken to hospital after being hit by a bus in Newcastle this morning.

It happened on Market Street in the city centre at around 9:20am.

She was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary. Her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Police car crashes into house

A police officer has been taken hospital after crashing a patrol car into a house in Horden. The officer received neck injuries which are not thought to be serious. It happened on Eleventh Street at 2.20pm while he was responding to a report of a shop robbery. Minor damage was caused to the house.
