Peter Gibson, a paedophile from Durham who was two years into a thirteen year jail term for convictions including rape, has died.
He was found 'unresponsive' in HMP Frankland on January 8.
Gibson, who lived in Bowburn, County Durham, carried out a campaign of sexual abuse against two girls in the 1990s.
He was sentenced to 13 and a half years in prison in 2013 after pleading guilty to 15 sexual offences against two girls - including four counts of rape.
A Prison Service Spokesperson said "Staff attempted CPR and paramedics were called but he was pronounced dead at 4:41pm. As with all deaths in custody there will be an investigation by the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman."

Cleveland Police were called at around 5:40pm last night to an address on Bank Sands off Trimdon Avenue in Acklam following a report of a sudden death of a 13-year-old boy.
The death is currently being treated as unexplained.
Investigations are at an early stage and the boys family are being supported by police.
Police have launched an investigation after a man's death in Sunderland.
Officers were called to Toward Road after a report of men with guns inside the address last night.
It was established that the report was false and had come from an address in Wetherby Road - police attended that address and spoke with the caller.
While at the address the caller, a 36-year-old man, became unwell and an ambulance was called to the address.
He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital where he died.
Enquiries are ongoing and will be referred to the IPCC.
Police investigating the death of a man at Marsden Grotto earlier this month are seeking further witnesses.
