John Askew from Digital UK explains how the first stage of digital switchover in the Tyne Tees region has been completed.

Some viewers watching on analogue from Pontop Pike transmitter might see BBC One by selecting the button for BBC Two because a change in frequency.

Almost 90,000 homes can now view digital television after the BBC Two analogue signal was switched off last night.

Anyone watching digital television through an aerial service like Freeview, BT Vision or Top-Up TV will need to retune today and again on the 26th of September when the digital switchover will be complete.

The digital switchover started last night as BBC Two's analogue signal turned off in the Tyne Tees region.

To be able to keep watching TV, viewers need to re-tune their Freeview, BT Vision or Top-Up TV boxes. Cable and satellite services are not affected.

The next stage will take place in two weeks.

There is just over a month to go until the digital switchover takes place and the old analogue TV signal is switched off.

The TV Presenter Maggie Philbin was in the region today to launch a new scheme, it's called Helping Hands. She was joined by a group of Brownies from Gateshead who've all pledged to help someone they know switch to digital television.

If you haven't converted to new equipment by September 26th, you'll no longer be able to watch ITV1 Tyne Tees, or any of the other main channels.
