New heart for Summer brings new year joy

A two-year-old girl and her family are looking forward to 2013, after spending most of last year waiting in hospital for a heart transplant.

Summer Carss from Shilbottle in Northumberland is now starting to walk and talk after being rushed to hospital last Christmas.

She was born with a heart condition, and had operations as a baby, but then fell ill with a chest infection last Christmas.

Summer needed a heart transplant after her heart began to fail, and was fitted with an artificial heart to keep her alive.

The family waited six months, a record at the hospital, before a donor was found.
