Metro services suspended between Monument and Heworth

Metro services are currently suspended between Monument and Heworth due to a section of overhead line coming down near Gateshead Stadium.

A replacement bus service is operating instead - it will call at Metro stations on the route.

Passengers are advised to allow extra time to complete their journeys.

Metro services between Heworth and South Shields and Heworth and South Hylton are now operating.

I apologise to call passengers who have been disrupted. Staff are on site and working hard to restore services as quickly as possible.

We have had problems with two sections of the overhead line coming down at Gateshead Stadium this morning just after 8am and at Hebburn at 6pm on Wednesday evening.

When the overhead line comes down we are unable to operate trains as they have no high voltage power fed to them.

So what happened?

  • The overhead line came down at Hebburn last night at 6pm. Nexus worked through the night to repair it for this morning.
  • The overhead line then came down at Gateshead Stadium at 8am today (Thurs). Engineers were sent to the site to carry out an assessment and start repairs.

TRAVEL: Metro update

Metro operator Nexus says parts of the line which closed earlier have now reopened.

The only stretch which remains shut is that between Heworth and Monument.

A replacement bus service is in operation between the two stations.

Nexus says engineers remain on site by Gateshead Stadium, but the line is likely to remain closed until this evening.
