Sports presenter and ardent Hartlepool United fan Jeff Stelling was at the Riverside Stadium this morning to prepare for an epic trek up Mount Kilimanjaro. The 58 year old will join former Middlesbrough players Craig Hignett and Colin Cooper for the climb to raise money for the Finlay Cooper Fund.
County Durham born Colin Cooper set up the charity in memory of his son Finlay who tragically died in a choking incident shortly before his second birthday ten years ago. The Finlay Cooper Fund has since raised money for children's charities.
The men are part of a group of 15 who will begin their 10 day expedition in June. To prepare, they'll use a specialist altitude chamber at Teesside University to experience the altitude of the 4,895 foot African summit which has temperatures ranging from 30 degrees to -15.
A team of workmates are scaling Kilimanjaro in memory of one of their colleagues who died in the French Alps.
John Taylor, who lived near York, was among nine climbers who lost their lives in an avalanche on Mont Blanc in France last year.
