North Tyneside Council withdraws plan to redevelop outdoor swimming pool site

North Tyneside Council is withdrawing plans to bring the Tynemouth outdoor swimming pool site back into use.

The local authority wanted the site to become a visitor attraction and events space but the plan drew a large number of negative responses from local people, many of whom wanted the pool itself reopened.

I’m extremely disappointed that we have lost a fantastic opportunity to improve what has been an eyesore for so many years.....While I completely understand the fondness for the former outdoor pool, there has never been any evidence to suggest it is commercially viable to bring it back into use as it was.

Tynemouth Metro celebrates Jubilee

Tynemouth Metro Station has hosted a special Diamond Jubilee festival.

The free event was opened by North Tyneside Mayor Linda Arkley, and was an afternoon packed with family entertainment.

Visitors were also able to admire the newly renovated historic roof, which has taken a year to complete at a cost of around £3.6 million.

The station is officially re-opening in July.
