An RAF jet has been forced into an emergency landing at Newcastle International Airport, after fumes filled the cockpit.
Two Hawk aircraft were diverted to the airport at around 11am after one of the cockpits began to fill with smoke.
The pilot was then flown to hospital by helicopter for precautionary checks.
The chairman of the Commons Transport Committee has expressed serious concerns over plans to close a helicopter search and rescue base in Northumberland.
Louise Ellman says she is surprised and disappointed about the proposed closure of RAF Boulmer.
Ms Ellman says there are understandable worries the closure may lead to slower response times and more fatalities. She wants a wider consultation on the plans.
