A huge fundraising celebration will be held on Monday evening to remember the life of Sir Bobby Robson.

The event, at the Sage in Gateshead, will mark what would have been Sir Bobby's 80th birthday.

The former Newcastle United and England manager died from cancer in July 2009.

Before his death, he launched the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation which has raised more than £4million towards the detection and treatment of cancer.

The event will include performances from Mark Knopfler, Russell Watson and Joe McElderry. A host of sports stars are also lending their support.

Proceeds will go towards the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and the Alan Shearer Foundation.

Northern Sinfonia nominated for GRAMMY

Northern Sinfonia, Orchestra of The Sage Gateshead, has had a CD nominated for a GRAMMY award.

Conductor Claudio Cruz recorded the world-premiere recording of Hans Gál’s Cello Concerto, coupled with Elgar’s Cello Concerto.

It has been nominated in the Best Classical Instrumental Solo category.

“Superb first recording of his Cello Concerto… could hardly be more eloquently served than here: the commanding Brazilian virtuoso Antonio Meneses surmounts every hurdle with ease and he is backed to the hilt by his compatriot Claudio Cruz at the helm of a notably alert Northern Sinfonia.”
