Man convicted of murder

A man who beat up his childhood friend with a baseball bat has been found guilty of murder.

Nicholas Rought, 45, of Princess Street, Shiney Row, has been convicted of the murder of 46-year-old John Hall at a house in Shiney Row.

His body was found in a country lane at West Rainton near to Durham City,

Another defendant, Stuart Smith, 42, of no fixed abode, originally from Shotley Bridge, was acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter at Newcastle Crown Court.

They will be sentenced on Wednesday.

Teen sexually assaulted in Sunderland

A teenager was sexually assaulted in Sunderland.

The incident took place at around 9.05pm on Thursday, August 1 when a 16-year-old girl was walking her dog in Success Road in Shiney Row when she was approached by a man on a bike.

The man touched the girl inappropriately before riding off. The girl was left shaken but unhurt by the incident.

The man is described as being in his 30s, of stocky build and around 5ft 8ins to 5ft10ins. He had brown hair and was wearing a green t-shirt and camouflage shorts.

There was a man seen walking in the street around the time the offence happened and police would also like to speak to him.
