Calls for police to be armed following Manchester shootings
The twin brother of Newcastle policeman David Rathband has called for police officers to be routinely armed following the double murder in Greater Manchester. PC Rathband was shot and blinded by gunman Raoul Moat and was found hanged at his home in Blyth in Northumberland last February.
His brother Darren, who's a policeman in South Australia, says yesterday's events in Manchester show that 21st century policing demands that officers carry weapons.
Two bodies in car are from same family
A post-mortem has confirmed that the two bodies of people found shot dead in a car in Crook are from the same family.
Police confirmed both died from gunshot wounds, but they are not looking for anybody in connection with the deaths.
The bodies are of a man in his 30s and a woman in her 50s.
