It is one of the biggest annual Trade Union events in the whole of Europe.
Every July thousands of ex miners, families and senior politicians gather to celebrate the area's long mining history.
But it costs thousands of pounds to stage with an estimated £26, 000 subsidy to the brass bands alone.
Now the Durham Miners Association has appealed to supporters and members of the public to consider becoming a Friend of the Gala by making a small regular monthly donation.
The appeal has been backed by the Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery who is a former President of the National Union of Mineworkers.
