Tom McLeod is 90 years old and has been living alone since his wife died. Apart from his pension, he thought he was not entitled to any other benefits. He has been part of a trial by Newcastle University to help older people find out what benefits they are entitled to.
Thanks to the Attendance Allowance and a pension credit, he says he’s now £80 a week better off. He uses the money to pay for a home help, a gardener to tend to his garden, and a meals-on-wheels service. He says without the extra money, he would be struggling to look after himself in his home.
