Sergeant John Lumbard, from North Yorkshire Police said: "We were called just after six o'clock to a traffic accident on the A1. It's a serious accident. A car has left the road and gone into a tree.
"At the moment it's very early stages of the investigation. But we do believe the weather conditions have played a significant part in what's happened."
