World Heritage application withdrawn

An application to create a third World Heritage site in the North East has been withdrawn. It had been hoped the seventh century monasteries of St Paul's at Jarrow and St Peter's at Sunderland would be listed alongside Durham Cathedral and Hadrian's Wall.

The sites were nominated by the government in 2006. They were recently inspected by the International Council of Monuments and Sites but their evaluation was disappointing and the application for the status has now been withdrawn.
