3,000 homes still without power

Engineers are working to restore power to 3,000 homes in Northumberland and County Durham after storms flooded substations and lighting hit power lines.

Northern Powergrid, which supplies the region's electricity, says at one stage yesterday afternoon 50,000 properties suffered power cuts. Traffic congestion due to flooding hampered attempts to reconnect the supply.

Consett and Stanhope in County Durham, and Alnwick in Northumberland remain the worst affected areas. Engineers hope to have electricity restored to all homes by the end of Friday.
