Train driver hit with stone while pulling out of station

A freight train driver was hit with a stone thrown through his window as he pulled out of Tyne Dock in South Shields.

The incident happened at around 5.55pm on Monday, October 8

PC Nick Cannon, from the British Transport Police, said: "The freight train was approaching Green Lane Bridge when the driver saw pedal cycles lying at the side of the tracks.

"A stone was then thrown at the train from the undergrowth at the side of the tracks.

"It flew through the open window."

When the trains was checked, a rear train light had been stolen.
