The man entered the address at Priory Close on Saturday morning (October 27th), posing as "Mary's cousin" before asking for a drink and to use the bathroom.
When the woman returned from the kitchen, she realised that the burglar had left and taken a wallet and purse containing around £120 with him.
The burglar is a white man in his twenties, around 6ft tall and of medium build. At the time of the burglary he was wearing a light blue anorak, tracksuit bottoms and gloves.
Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the crime should contact Northallerton Police on 101.
