Castlerigg Stone Circle, Keswick Credit: Sheila Lewis, Tyne & Wear

A bitterly cold few days ahead.

Overnight into Monday: Widespread frost. Clearer in the west. Wintry mix of showers possible, feeding in off North Sea, settling over hills where they develop - even at lower levels for a time. 'Ice Warning' for the east as temperatures dip below zero.

Monday: Showers continue for a time during the morning, falling as sleet and snow where they develop inland. Further west drier and brighter conditions. Cold and breezy for all.
