The former chief constable of Durham is to lead a new police investigation into the Hillsborough Disaster.

Jon Stoddart, who retired from the Durham force earlier this year, will head the new inquiry which was announced by the Home Secretary today.

It follows the damning report from the Hillsborough independent panel which revealed a police cover-up attempting to shift the blame for the 1989 tragedy onto its victims.

Also today the High Court ordered new inquests on the Liverpool football fans who died.
