Cuts to bus services causing real hardship

The Sedgefield MP Phil Wilson has warned ministers that deep cuts to rural bus services, across County Durham, are causing real hardship to many of his constituents.

He cited examples ranging from young workers no longer able to get to work on time to a pensioner who had to walk more than a mile with her 50-year-old disabled daughter to see their doctor.

The Transport minister, Simon Burns, accepted that tough decisions had to be taken but praised many of the local initiatives being taken by Durham and Darlington Councils to develop alternative community transport links.
